My Critique Of Yoga And The Clinical World Of Counseling

Before choosing this article for my critique I used several factors to determine its value to this assignment. I had first had to determine if the content of the article would have value in the clinical world of counseling. This article is written by Stacie Stukin, a yoga instructor who writes contributing articles for Yoga Journal and yoga instructor Annalisa Cunningham who has also written Healing Addiction with Yoga. Both clearly believe and have witnessed firsthand the benefits that yoga can contribute to addiction recovery. The article explains that a yoga practice will help the recovery process on two fronts. A yoga practice will help the physical body by helping it rid itself of the physical impurities that have built up over time through the ingestion of substances such as alcohol and various illicit narcotics can debilitate a body and cause the receptors of the body to call for these substances that create the cravings and if not supplied to body create painful withdrawals. These cravings and withdrawals can be very hurtful to the body and wreak havoc on the mind as the addicted person tries to overcome them. So how can one make it through these physical obstacles and come out on the other side? We need a strong physical and mental base to guide us through the physical pain. This is what a yoga practice brings to our healing as we strengthen our body through the strengthening of our mind and vice versa. How Are the Female Characters in the Importance of Being...

How are the female characters in The Importance of Being Earnest presented and in what ways do they conform to the Victorian ideal of passive women. Victorian England made a clear division between gender roles of men and women. The life of a conventional Victorian woman was focused on marriage and family in which her upbringing was based on this. Young girls were brought up to perfectly innocent and sexually ignorant. The typical Victorian woman was seen to be weak and passive, she was taught to be obedient to authority and to keep her opinion to herself or not to have an opinion at all. Within the home, a Victorian woman took charge of the household and the education of the children however at the same time she was to provide a place of†¦show more content†¦However during the beginning of Act Three, all is forgiven. Both women are hopelessly in love with their male counterparts. Cecily is describes as â€Å"a sweet simple, innocent girl.† Gwendolen is seen as â€Å"a brilliant, clever, thoroughly experienced lady.† Despite these contrasts both women are intent on marrying a man named Ernest, Eager to embra ce one another as sisters and quick to become rivals pitted against each other. Gwendolen seems to be a typical Victorian woman at first glance. She was raised in the city by her mother. Lady Bracknell, and has become â€Å"the sophisticated, fashionable woman of the town†. Her mother has sheltered her from the dangers of the world and still tries to control her life. Due to her conformist, sheltered upbringing, Gwendolen believes she lives in â€Å"an age of ideals† and believes in self-improvement for this reason. Her mother has made sure she recovered a good education, this was emphasised on a multiple occasions in the play that she is a â€Å"sensible, intellectual girl†. It was not uncommon for upper class girls such as Gwendolen to receive a good education during their upbringing. She is obedient to her mother; Lady Bracknell wants a good advantageous marriage for her daughter and is perfectly happy to interfere if things do not go to plan. Lady Bracknell forbids Gwendolen to marry jack, which she seems to accept, at first. However

Hedge Fund Compliance and Risk Management

Question: Discuss about the Hedge Fund Compliance and Risk Management. Answer: Introduction The company that we are going to analyze is called Samson Oil and gas company. Samson oil; and gas company is a gas mining company that is listed in the Australian stock exchange. The objectives of a chief finance officer varies depending on the company ,however, there are fundamental roles that a chief finance officer does apart from managing the companys finances. The main aim of this officer is to ensure that he makes good decisions to maximize shareholders wealth being a member of the senior management of Samson Oil and gas company (Bahbah, 2009). The CFO has got to be a qualified financial analyst who has done all the necessary courses to enhance his competence on this job. For a company that is affected by foreign exchange rates, there is need to have a CFO who understands all the aspects of the companys finances (Gregoriou, 2006). Hence the position of a CFO cannot be over emphasized in the contemporary world. There are some significant differences between small and large businesses regarding their form of ownership, Samson oil and gas Ltd is a listed company and has shareholders who own a piece of the company. These differences make it necessary to modify the principles of financial management to be applied in the area of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ ¹Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ ¹small businesses as well as big companies such as Samson oil and gas Ltd (Gregoriou, 2006). From an initial conception as a set of simple guidelines that remained a mere knowledge of markets and institutions that made up administrative tasks, the finance function has been increasingly involving in the management of the company, from, first, the analysis of the investments decided by the management of the company; then the search for the necessary financial resources and cheaper sources of capital to deal with these investment projects (Guizot, 2007). Studies on optimal financial structure, corporate liquidity, increased financial reporting and the establishment of the budget and financial planning have been other tasks that has been charging the finance department of companies. The role of the finance function within the company has evolved over time, especially as economic structures have increased their complexity and size of the companies has increased. Thus, we see how the role of the finance function has evolved to blend into the objective of the company, which is none other than to increase their value, that is, to maximize shareholder wealth (Hillier, 2010).To do this, it is necessary that the financial department take appropriate decisions leading to the achievement of that objective, what is concrete, simply, in making investment decisions on capital budget on the project or projects convenience for the company taking into account the characteristics of risk and return of each of them (Helbk, Lindest and McLellan, 2010). funding decisions in the sense of choosing between financial sources, the one available or a combination of those, that is most interesting for the company; and finally, a decision on the policy best suited to dividends carry out-not to forget the distinction between own sources of funding and others- to achieve the business objective: to maximize the value of the company and thus wealth of shareholders (Guizo t, 2007). The CFO, is responsible for the finance function in the company therefore has assigned a number of functions, all related to investment-financing duality (Moles, 2011). Role of a CFO The role of a Chief Finance officer is consistently developing due to the need for firms to become more competitive financially , in order to achieve improved economic performance as well as creating value for shareholders .It is asserted that the objective is usually to increase the financial value of the organization , he makes investment , dividend and financing decisions for the company ( Nikbakht and Groppelli , n .d . ) . Making financial projections First , the CFO makes financial projections and also must determine the cost that may make an incorrect projection in product sales or liquidity in the company .It is crucial that the CFO becomes alert to the global economy and figure out how the organization may be impacted by changes in international markets as well as effects on exchange rates , devaluation and interest charges ( Ross , Westerfield and Jordan , 2007 ) . Formulating dividend policies The CFO also establishes the policies of dividends payments that fit the organization in the long run , planning whether to distribute interim profits realized or else apply a continuous growth policy and pay at year end. The CFO persuades stakeholders on a policy that serves the organization best and increase the profitability for the owners of the company in the long term ,This is importatnt since it is associated with good policies on liquidity management of the organization , portfolio as well as inventories etc ( Nelken , 2006 ) . financial decisions in the company are made by the Chief financial officer ( Shiller , 2012 ) . When sector competitiveness raises pressure to firms , it results in the need to assess how many functional aspects of business may be developed and how to use new indicators that apply not only finance but additionally provide info about other factors that may influence the company, This is the work of a chief finance officer to evaluate all the areas of the business (Ross, Westerfield and Jordan, 2000). Making investment and financing decisions To conclude we must make it clear that the Chief finance officer should not focus solely to compliance with one of the above functions, but must worry about meeting the three together. The Chief finance officer should worry because through all the decisions taken within the company; in this way, regardless of fulfilling its objective function is to maximize the wealth of shareholders, the company can keep daily for society to give more value and that the same employees are satisfied of working within the same. To fulfill their objective function must be supported mainly three types of decisions are investment decisions, financing decisions and dividend decisions (Smart, Megginson and Gitman, 2004).The Chief finance officer must have constant knowledge of the economic situation and trends in the world economy; he should be a good reader of newspapers and magazines. For Samson oil and gas Ltd, the CFO, should know the trend of the exchange rate and should study new situations, such as the case of a change in the pattern of development of a country. The Chief finance officer, given his interaction with all areas and how this affects the global market. How responsibility of CFO can impact objective of the company Stability and adaptation to the environment is an objectives that each company should have. The responsibility of a CFO is to stabilize the company in an economy that has a lot of ups and downs. If the company wants to grow or simply survive in the market in which it operates, it must be prepared to face the changes that may occur in the context where it operates. Hence the CFO has a responsibility to steer the company in a path that will ensure that the company is stable. Another objective of a company is to seek and increase the loyalty of its customers in markets where it already operates before expanding to other geographical areas or other areas of business. However, growth is the natural tendency of any company. The CFO should come up with policies and strategies to ensure that the company increases its market share and has customer loyalty (Nikbakht and Groppelli, n.d.). There is also the objective of ensuring that there is social and ethical responsibility towards the groups with which relate the management relate to with directly such as (owners, employees, customers, suppliers, public sector unions, etc.), to society and to the environment in which they operate. This is one of the objectives that a CFO should ensure that all the stakeholders are treated well. The Chief finance officer is the one who represents the interests of shareholders and make decisions on their behalf, with a goal of financial management make money or add value to the company. The main objective of this company is to maximize profits hence the CFO hams got a very big role to play in ensuring that the decisions that they make will increase shareholders returns. If the company want to make a profit this year to be taken into account actions such as deferring maintenance, keep the lower limits inventories and take measures to reduce costs .Another objective of the company is to minimize cost, the CFO is responsible for creating operations that reduce wastes and increase efficiency in the company thus he is very important for Samson oil and gas Ltd and ensures that the company incurs very minimal costs (Moles, 2011).. One of the main activities of the Chief finance officer is financial planning; in which are concentrated the three main tasks of the Chief finance officer which are; Investement decisions, finance decisions and credit decisions. It can be concluded that the role of the Chief finance officer is expanding as well as growing the market share of the organization , this due to the significant business adjustments leading organizations to evaluate in a better way to manipulate its financial statements , enhancing its financial projecti ons , making use of capital policies work and also good credit management . Also, the CFO should analyze capital costs compared to profitability and its equity and the use of all the financial methods necessary to safeguard the companys interest in the market ( Moles , 2011 ) . Efficient market hypothesis The efficient markets hypothesis wasformulatedby Professor Eugene Fama of theInstitutionof Business at the Chicago University.Efficient market hypothesisaffirmsthatmonetarymarket segmentsareeffectivewith regards totheinfotheydeal with, this impliesassetcostscurrently have internalizedinformation of the market.Beatingthe marketby making use ofjust about anyinformation that the market currentlyknows is not possible according to this hypothesis. . He had already written his first tragedy in his life all by his self when he was only twelve years old. His father had helped him get into technical school but he really didn’t want to be in that school so he went to the school that really interested him which was the school of humanities. Luigi Pirandello had finished his high school education when he and his family had moved to Palermo in 1880. When he graduated from school he had a crush on his female cousin and you could always tell the differences between him and his dad. He actually tried to marry his cousin but his father wouldn’t allow him to do that because he thought that would be strange so the marriage got denied. Knowing that he couldn’t marry his cousin he moved to Rome where he associated with a major big group of poem writers as Luigi Capuana, Giustino Ferri and Ugo Fleres. He dedicated himself to narrative writing from the pursuer Luigi Capuana. He had written his first important work called Marta Ajala in 1893 which finally became published in 1901. The year 1984 his collection of short stories was published which was the same year he had also got married to a female that he really loved named Antonietta Portulano. They had a son together named Stefono and he joined the army. World War 1 had started in Italy and his son had got caught by the Australians and they held him prisoned. When he found out he felt so miserable knowing that he was being tortured by the enemy. Literary Analysis of Luigi Pirandello’s Work Luigi went on to owning the Teatro dArte di Roma and assumed direction of artistic in 1925. Pirandello was now known as â€Å"a Fascist because I am Italian. . The Giants Of The Mountains, the play that he had wrote was interpreted as real facts of his realization that the fascists were hostile to life in general and to society. Later in life Luigi had come to New York, Pirandello distributed a strong belief and thoughts speaking about his support of Italys decision on joining of Abyssinia, Ethiopia. If anything that helped him with his fame, Mussolinis support is what helped him with his international worldwide fame and international worldwide tour, introducing the work that was done by him to Brazil, Germany, Prague, Vienna, Argentina, Paris, Budapest, and London. He later in life gave his Nobel Prize medal to the Fascist government to be held up for the  Abyssinia Campaign. He told his fans and listeners worldwide an apolitical belief, stating that Im apolitical; Im only a man in the world † He had a lot of many problems with famous fascist kings while he was in the membership. He tore his fascist membership card in tiny bits of pieces right in front of the shocked secretary general of the Fascist Party themselves in 1927. In the rest of his life, Pirandello was always being watched move by move, very closely by the secret fascist police. He was being watched because what he had did was very disrespectable and they thought that he might be up to no good after that. He has written 21 books in his life, the names of the books are Enrico IV (Henry IV), Cosi e (Se Vi Pare) (So It Is (If You Think So)), LImbecille (The Imbecile), Una boccata daria (A Breath of Air), I Vecchi e I Giovani The Old and the Young), Sei Personaggi in Cerca dAutore (Six Characters in Search of an Author), Questa Sera Si Recita a Soggetto (Tonight We Improvise), La Vita che ti Diedi (The Life I Gave You), Il Piacere dellOnesta (The Pleasure Of Honesty), LUomo, La Bestia e La Virtu (The Man, The Beast and The Virtue), and many more to name. In I Vecchi e I Giovani, which means â€Å"The Old and the Young†, Pirandello talks about an enormous historical nice and cool, which could probably match into a whole southern Italian custom of writing, commencement with the Vicere of De Roberto. I Vecchi e I Giovani, set in Sicily for the time of the Fasci Siciliani, describes the failure of three myths replacement of them with a hopeless emptiness with no possibility of redemption. Already in Pirandellos very first novel called LEsclusa, you can clearly tell that everything and anything is unpredictable; on the note, everything and anything can happen to anybody in life. So therefore, there are no certain hold or objective statements which can be connected with judgments and physical behavior. In Binets which means proofs, Pirandello located scientific help for the many question as to why he was sitting down in a room most of his time in Germany thinking about life when he stayed in Germany. Steffens, Shubert and many other people who had questioned themselves with beliefs and dreams that were the first to discover the end of the subconscious. Steffens had already told a statement of a consciousness which sinks into the night and, in Jean Paul, there are already known ideas of fear and scarce of crumble and the cooling sensation of seeing your own self live a life accepted by you. He later shares that he is not the only person who can see this view that he is seeing about his own life, anybody could see the same exact thing if you put your mind into what you are trying to make happen. Its very hard not to be shocked and excited by the courage of Pirandello who had been making these accomplishments in his art from his very first novel. But tears and frowns later caused by his knowing death, matter of fact, Mattia Pascal which is a book that was written by Luigi Pirandello quickly recreates another person which, only is seen even different from the first, n person means that its preposterous matter is twice as much than before when first started. Mattias voyages, without a specific location, can seem like today’s transcription of the very good love theme of travelling from country to country.

Are We Losing Our Freedom essays

Are We Losing Our Freedom essays Are we losing our freedom? The answer is yes, we are. Phone lines are tapped legally but without the owners consent, e-mails and credit card numbers are read and stolen, and personal information are becoming not personal any longer. Parties, including the government, special interest groups, as well as ordinary citizens, are quietly leeching our freedom away. The government has done a large part in slowly taking our freedom. In recent months, some people are arrested for owning child pornography, some of those have only kept this pictures for their own private use and have not use these materials to affect others lives. I am not saying a agree on child pornography, but this is a clear example of how the government is digging into an individuals private life in an attempt to arrest those who has done nothing to harm the general public. Since a lot of people are standing with the government on arresting the child pornographic owners, this could mean that the government might use this power to control other aspects of our lives- aspects of ones life that would affect nobody but themselves. Our fellow citizens are also slowly taking the vast majoritys population of the freedom. Take the gay rights protestors for an example. In 1984, Trudeau passed a law that states that gay relationship is legalized and that bedroom businesses none of the governments business. In year 2000, these gay protestors are taking their bedroom businesses out of the bedroom and onto the streets! These people want to be socially accepted, and they want to integrate this aspect of bedroom life into the education system. So children, no matter if they want any part of the guy issue or not, are being force to learn and accept homosexual behaviour. This is a clear invasion of the vast majoritys freedom. All the society is talking about is gay rights, how the homosexual must have rights. Then, where are ou ...

Major General Abner Doubleday in the Civil War

Major General Abner Doubleday in the Civil War Born at Ballston Spa, NY on June 26, 1819, Abner Doubleday was the son of Representative Ulysses F. Doubleday and his wife, Hester Donnelly Doubleday. Raised in Auburn, NY, Doubleday came from a strong military tradition as his father had fought in the War of 1812 and his grandfathers had served during the American Revolution. Educated locally in his early years, he was later sent to live with an uncle in Cooperstown, NY so that he could attend a private preparatory school (Cooperstown Classical and Military Academy). While there, Doubleday received training as a surveyor and civil engineer. Throughout his youth, he expressed interests in reading, poetry, art, and mathematics. After two years of private practice, Doubleday received an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point. Arriving in 1838, his classmates included John Newton, William Rosecrans, John Pope, Daniel H. Hill, George Sykes, James Longstreet, and Lafayette McLaws. Though regarded as a â€Å"diligent and thoughtful student, Doubleday proved an average scholar and he graduated in 1842 ranked 24th in a class of 56. Assigned to the 3rd US Artillery, Doubleday initially served at Fort Johnson (North Carolina) before moving through several assignments in coastal fortifications. Mexican-American War With the outbreak of the Mexican-American War in 1846, Doubleday received a transfer west to the 1st US Artillery. Part of Major General Zachary Taylors army in Texas, his unit commenced preparing for the invasion of northeastern Mexico. Doubleday soon marched south and saw action at the hard-fought Battle of Monterrey. Remaining with Taylor the following year, he served at Rinconada Pass during the Battle of Buena Vista. On March 3, 1847, shortly after the battle, Doubleday was promoted to first lieutenant. Returning home, Doubleday married Mary Hewitt of Baltimore in 1852. Two years later, he was ordered to the frontier for service against the Apaches. He completed this assignment in 1855 and received a promotion to captain. Dispatched south, Doubleday served in Florida during the Third Seminole War from 1856-1858 and also helped to map the Everglades as well as modern Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Charleston Fort Sumter In 1858, Doubleday was posted to Fort Moultrie in Charleston, SC. There he endured the growing sectional strife that marked the years immediately before the Civil War and commented, â€Å"Almost every public assemblage was tinctured with treasonable sentiments and toasts against the flag were always warmly applauded.† Doubleday remained at Fort Moultrie until Major Robert Anderson withdrew the garrison to Fort Sumter after South Carolina seceded from the Union in December 1860. On the morning of April 12, 1861, Confederate forces in Charleston opened fire on Fort Sumter. Within the fort, Anderson selected Doubleday to fire the first shot of the Union response. Following the forts surrender, Doubleday returned north and was quickly promoted to major on May 14, 1861. With this came an assignment to the 17th Infantry in Major General Robert Pattersons command in the Shenandoah Valley. In August, he was transferred to Washington where he commanded batteries along the Potomac. On February 3, 1862, he was promoted to brigadier general and placed in command of the Washington defenses. Second Manassas With the formation of Major General John Popes Army of Virginia in the summer of 1862, Doubleday received his first combat command. Leading the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, III Corps, Doubleday played a key role at Brawners Farm during the opening actions of the Second Battle of Bull Run. Though his men were routed the next day, they rallied to cover the retreat of the Union army on August 30, 1862. Transferred to the I Corps, Army of the Potomac with the rest of Brigadier General John P. Hatchs division, Doubleday next saw action at the Battle of South Mountain on September 14. Army of the Potomac When Hatch was wounded, Doubleday took command of the division. Retaining command of the division, he led them at the Battle of Antietam three days later. Fighting in the West Woods and Cornfield, Doubledays men held the right flank of the Union army. Recognized for his superior performance at Antietam, Doubleday was brevetted to lieutenant colonel in the Regular Army. On November 29, 1862, he was promoted to major general. At the Battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, Doubledays division was held in reserve and avoided taking part in the Union defeat. In the winter of 1863, I Corps was reorganized and Doubleday was shifted to command the 3rd Division. He served in this role at the Battle of Chancellorsville that May, but his men saw little action. As Lees army moved north in June, Major General John Reynolds’ I Corps led the pursuit. Arriving in Gettysburg on July 1, Reynolds moved to deploy his men in support of Brigadier General John Bufords cavalry. While directing his men, Reynolds was shot and killed. Command of the corps devolved on Doubleday. Racing forward, he completed the deployment and guided the corps through the opening stages of the battle. Gettysburg Positioned northwest of the town, Doubledays men were badly outnumbered by the approaching Confederate army. Fighting valiantly, I Corps held their position for five hours and was only forced to retreat after XI Corps collapsed on their right. Outnumbered 16,000 to 9,500, Doubledays men inflicted 35-60% casualties on seven of the ten Confederate brigades that attacked them. Falling back to Cemetery Hill, the remains of I Corps held their position for the remainder of the battle. On July 2, the commander of the Army of the Potomac, Major General George Meade, replaced Doubleday as commander of I Corps with the more junior Newton. This was largely the result of a false report submitted by the XI Corps commander, Major General Oliver O. Howard, stating that I Corps broke first. It was fostered by a long-running dislike of Doubleday, whom he believed indecisive, which went back to South Mountain. Returning to his division, Doubleday was wounded in the neck later in the day. After the battle, Doubleday officially requested that he be given command of I Corps. When Meade refused, Doubleday departed the army and rode to Washington. Assigned to administrative duties in the city, Doubleday served on courts martial and commanded part of the defenses when Lieutenant General Jubal Early threatened to attack in 1864. While in Washington, Doubleday testified before Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War and criticized Meades conduct at Gettysburg. With the end of hostilities in 1865, Doubleday remained in the army and reverted to his regular rank of lieutenant colonel on August 24, 1865. Promoted to colonel in September 1867, he was given command of the 35th Infantry. Later Life Posted to San Francisco in 1869, to head the recruiting service, he obtained a patent for a cable car railway system and opened the citys first cable car company. In 1871, Doubleday was given command of the African-American 24th Infantry in Texas. After commanding the regiment for two years, he retired from the service. Settling in Mendham, NJ, he became involved with Helena Blavatsky and Henry Steel Olcott. The founders of the Theosophical Society, they converted Doubleday to the tenets of Theosophy and Spiritualism. When the pair moved to India to continue their studies, Doubleday was named the president of the American chapter. He continued to live in Mendham until his death on January 26, 1893. Doubledays name is most commonly known due to its association with the origins of baseball. While the 1907 Mills Commission Report states that the game was invented by Doubleday at Cooperstown, NY in 1839, subsequent scholarship has proven this unlikely. Despite this, Doubledays name remains deeply linked to the games history.

This may become even more important when the organization’s strategy is taking it into new countries, or different forms of alliance and collaborative ventures. Organizations can contribute to the success of such plans by ensuring that social differences are considered when common policies are defined, that announcements are made in a way that is most effective for each culture, and that managers who have to operate across country borders understand the nature of the cultural differences involved, and adjust their own behavior to obtain the best result (Bartlett, Ghoshal, 1999). According to Storey (1989): The drive to adopt HRM is...based on the business case of a need to respond to an external threat from increasing competition. It is a philosophy that appeals to managements who are striving to increase competitive advantage and appreciate that to do this they must invest in human resources as well as new technology (Storey 1989, p. 34). With the commodification of products, increases in liquidity, and widespread availability of information, services and products have a great need for flexibility and creativity on the part of managers in order to secure high-quality revenue. The Role of the HR Function Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1

The Role of the HR Function - Assignment Example This paper illustrates that some of the main challenges that HR departments are confronted with are the acquisition of new technologies, new skills, incorporating social values, deteriorating conditions of work, etc. The project makes an assessment of the major roles of HR and their importance in the organizations. The basic function of HR in a variety of technical, complex, analytical tasks is to support the internal HR services in the department. The department conducts various duties apart from recruitment and selection, compensation plan administration, classification, affirmative action, position control, benefits administration, and personnel policy administration, labor contract. Besides it is also required to handle such responsibilities as interpretation, processing, and tracking of grievance, labor and employee relations, acting as the chief negotiator for the agency’s contract/s performance appraisal tracking, and also a wide variety of activities. One of the major roles of HR functions is to manage line management. The HR departments have the responsibility of communicating the roles of the line managers. There is also an increasing requirement for the personnel activities to be measured against the costs involved and the value that they add. The HR plays the main role in measuring the balance between the above aspects. Team development and management account for another important function of the human resource departments in organizations. This is done starting from the process of recruitment, selection, management, promotions, staff development etc. Recruitment involves looking for the right candidates according to the requirements of the organization. This includes choosing candidates according to their educational qualifications, setting the job roles and job descriptions etc.

Business Management of Owning a Construction Company Essay Example for Free

Business Management of Owning a Construction Company Essay Owning a construction company requires good planning whereby the management puts several measures in place to ensure that a company performs well to generate enough money that aids it run its operations. Availability of surplus raw materials is one of the important factors to consider while managing a construction company. A construction firm should have enough laborers who offer services to customers and who work at the production stage. Running a construction company requires that the management come up with a good marketing strategy that allows the company to attract as many clients as possible to allow the organization generate enough income to carry out its activities effectively. Keeping records in an organized manner makes it easy for a construction company to make references and also to avoid loss of data. Managers who plan their activities wisely and accordingly in a construction company are in a better position of elevating the profit that the company generates and to improve the quality of goods and services that the firm offers. Definition of Important Concepts Management is a common term that this paper uses and it means to adopt effective measures as a leader that help to run an organization in an effective manner. The term construction is also common in this analysis and it means to come up with projects such as buildings, bridges and roads using qualified personnel. Counterarguments Even though raw materials are essential in the running of a construction company, some companies lack them due to poor management which in most cases leads to the fall of a business. Other construction companies lack enough laborers and this makes the available workers to strain with their work which in most cases lowers the outcome of construction companies. Lack of effective marketing strategy and lack of proper ways of record keeping also in many instances lead to the downfall of many construction companies because they are not able to generate sufficient income from different customers and they experience confusion respectively. This report makes use of an imaginary company by the name of Davis Construction firm to expound on the management of owning a construction company. As part of its activities, this construction firm produces building bricks from clay soil, produces celling boards that builders fit inside houses, and also hires professional masons and other construction desi gners to people or organizations that want to come up with buildings. To attain its goals, the management of Davis Construction firm must take into account several measure that will help it run its activities. Availability of Raw Materials First of all, the manager of this organization must ensure that there is a continuous flow of raw materials to enable the firm continue with its production. In this case, the essential raw materials that Davis Construction firm needs are clay soil to manufacture bricks, wood chips to manufacture celling board, and sufficient water to carry out the mixing process. Other raw materials that this organization needs to produce its goods include chemicals that it uses to carry out its production. A good manager will carry out a research on the best places to acquire the raw materials so that the firms does not experience delays in its production process. To ensure a steady supply of raw materials in a construction firm, managers should have more than one source of suppliers who deliver raw materials to the company. Having more than one source of supplier who supply the same product is important because this allows a company to carry out its activities continuously not to inconvenience customers. In many instances, unreliable suppliers make business managers to consider alternative ways getting raw materials to carry out an organization’s activities (Alonso, 2007, p. 3). Another way in which the manager of this company and any other construction company can ensure constant availability of raw materials is by establishing nearby sites that generate enough raw materials to run the activities of an organization. For example, to have a constant supply of water, the manager can hire professionals to come and dig boreholes that will provide surplus water to the firm at a much cheaper cost. Availability of Workers Effective management of a construction company calls for hiring enough laborers who help in running the organization’s activities. A wise manager will therefore, put measures to ensure that the laborers share work equally and that they do not strain while carrying out their activities. The laborers in a construction firm should fall into several sections where each worker partakes in the activity of his specialization. By each worker taking part in the activities of his specialization, a construction firm will attain accuracy in all the goods it produces and all the services it offers. To get laborers of sufficient knowledge to carry out their activities, the management of Davis Construction Firm should carry out a test while recruiting laborers after ascertaining their credentials. Even though it is a common occurrence in many countries that construction activities attract workers with low educational level (ILO, 2001, p. 12), it is important for managers to hire workers with high qualification to do their job perfectly so as to come up with products and services that satisfy customers’ needs. The management should ensure that workers get sufficient training to enable them carry out their duties with preciseness. As a way of improving the technical skills of their workers, managers should organize educative seminars where other professionals offer theoretical and practical knowledge to the workers. Good managers take the initiative of helping technicians who show great ability in their duties attain further training and also to serve as motivation to the co ntractors. Managers in a construction company should also take their workers to tour different construction firms because if they fail to do this, it will be impossible to compete favorably with other construction firms. Marketing Strategies A construction company should adopt effective marketing strategies that allows it to reach customers from different geographical regions. After intense research about marketing strategies, managers in construction companies such as Davies Construction Firm should come up with a suitable way of marketing the goods and services that the firm offers. To effectively reach customers from different regions, managers who run construction firms should adopt reliable channels such as the internet and publications because these two are able to carry so much information about a company and are also able to transmit information within a very short time. Enhanced technology has improved communication and marketing which has positive effect on inter-organizational relationship and communication (Avlonitis Karayanni, 2000, p. 442). Managers in a construction firms should appoint certain people with the right qualification to manage the company’s website and to attend to customers’ ne eds. In a business organization, it is important for managers to create a customers’ department wing to improve the quality of services and to build a long-term relationship with the customers (Rust, Moorman, Bhalla, 2010, p. 5). Record Keeping Managers who run construction companies should adopt better ways of storing vital information. Good forms of record keeping enable construction companies to make necessary reference whenever conflicts or discrepancies occur. For example, Davis Construction Firm can adopt better ways of record keeping by using computers that are able to store large amount of data for a very long time. People in charge of electronically storing data must be very keen in their activities to ensure that the information stays for a long time without getting lost (Trace, 2002, p. 138). Managers in a construction firm should also adopt a way of keeping records that is easy to retrieve information. Some of the advisable ways of keeping records in a manner that is easy to retrieve include using alphabetical orders, storing records according to the subject and keeping records in accordance to urgency. Conclusion Managers who run construction firms should take the initiative of helping the company attain its goals. As part of their management duties, managers should be able to come up with ways that ensures a constant and sufficient supply of raw materials to enable the firm carry out production of goods and services continuously. A manager should also be able to ensure that a construction firm has enough workers who help in carrying out the activities of a company in accordance to their area of specialty. Coming up with an effective marketing strategy helps to reach customers from different regions and therefore, be able to generate enough money for the construction firm. Above all, a manager in a construction firm needs to device effective methods of storing vital information about past and current operations of a construction firm. References Alonso, E., et al. Pesticides In Ground Water and Drinking Water :: Drinking Water Quality

What is a pesticide?A pesticide is a chemical substance used to kill pests, especially insects. A pesticide is also refered to as a biocide. Most pesticides are applied in spray form but occasionaly you will see pesticides that are in powder or pellet form. Pesticides are used on a variety of things, anything from crops like corn, barley, and wheat, to plants like petunias, marigolds, and rhodadendrons, which are usually found in small gardens greenhouses, and even in your backyard. What is ground water? Water is the life blood of every living creature on earth. Approximately 70 percent of the earth's surface is covered with water. Through the wonders of nature, water can take on many different forms. It is easy to understand the significance water plays in our lives but it may be difficult to understand the water that exists below the earth's surface. This water is called groundwater. Groundwater is usually held in porous soil or rock materials, much the same way water is held in a sponge. The source for much of the world's drinking water is ground water. When pesticdes are sprayed on crops, where do the pesticides go after they are applied to the crops? They soak into the ground where the roots can pick up the pesticide. That further proves my point that pesticides soak into the ground. Pesticides in ground watrer seems to be a continual problem with people now days, because they think that the pesticides dont soak into the ground water. They believe that when a pesticide is sprayed on a plant the leaves are what pick up the pesticide but thats false, the roots pick up the pesticides which proves that the pesticides have to soak at least a few feet into the ground.

Romantics cautioned Essay

Whereas the great minds of the Enlightenment has placed great value on the pursuit and acquisition of knowledge, the Romantics cautioned that knowledge, unrestrained by a proper respect for the natural order, could lead to despair. There are several episodes in the book that point to the destructive power of knowledge that does not respect proper boundaries. The reader’s impression of Victor undergoes a transformation from a light, idyllic childhood, to a darker, more solitary figure pursing his passion by moonlight at Ingolstadt. His retelling of the story takes on a rushed, obsessive mood as he talks of nights in graveyards and charnel houses, foraging in the ground for human flesh and body parts. He remarks, â€Å"I seem to have lost all soul or sensation but for this one pursuit.†(Shelley 39) In his obsessive pursuit of knowledge and the power to create life, Frankenstein oversteps the boundaries of nature. In a moment of reflection, Frankenstein warns Walton, â€Å"Learn from me†¦ how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow.† (Shelley 38) In a similar manner, the innocence and naivetà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ of the monster undergoes a transformation while sitting outside the cottage increasing his knowledge from tales in Ruins of Empire. Retelling this new knowledge to Frankenstein, the monster laments, â€Å"I could not conceive how one man could go forth to murder his fellow, or even why there were laws and governments†¦when I heard details of vice and bloodshed, my wonder ceased and I turned away in disgust and loathing.† (Shelley 104) Having previously been enamored with the beauties of nature, and capability of man, the monster reflected a sense of disillusionment when he asked, â€Å"Was man, indeed, at once so powerful, so virtuous and magnificent, yet so vicious and base?†(Shelley 104) Perhaps the most powerful caution against knowledge that does not respect natural laws comes when Shelley invokes the themes of Genesis, and Milton’s Paradise Lost. What more powerful image could there be to prove this point, than that of Adam and Eve disobeying God’s laws, eating from the forbidden tree of knowledge, and being cast out of the Garden of Eden into the dark world? Shelley’s portrayal of Victor and the monster’s evolution seem to align the innocence of childhood with the Romantic themes of sentiment, emotion, and an idealized view of the world. Victor’s depiction of his childhood seems to be filled with hope and happiness. He retells fond memories of family and friends that appear in stark contrast to the path his life took after the death of his mother. Similarly, the monster is initially described as possessing a childlike inquisitiveness, innocent and optimistic, until the outside world changes him. â€Å"I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend.†(Shelley, 84) Experience and knowledge change both of these characters for the worse. It is only the return of a friend from Victor’s childhood, Henry Clerval, which can pull Victor out of his darkness and rekindle an appreciation for the beauties of nature. Romantics believed that people should look to the natural world around them in order to provide insight into their inner selves. (Spielvogel 152) Frankenstein’s obsessive and reclusive studies cause him to neglect correspondence with his family for two years, and it is only Clerval’s appearance that can draw him out of seclusion and into nature. Their explorations through the countryside restore life to Victor. His renewed appreciation for nature makes him temporarily forget the dark, destructive path he was on. Clerval is the epitome of a Romantic character, well read in books of chivalry and romance, a composer of heroic songs, and an author of tales of enchantment and knightly adventure. (Shelley 23) These are the themes of the Romantic Movement! Shelley’s depiction of Victor and Clerval are not meant to be an indictment of education and knowledge, or even of science for that matter. According to Patricia Neal, Shelley â€Å"considered education essential for improvement.† (Neal) In fact, it is the knowledge the monster receives by reading great works of literature that allow him to develop a sense of awareness and truth about himself. Shelley cautions against the unrestrained quest for knowledge, as Victor warns Walton â€Å"you seek for knowledge and wisdom†¦and I ardently hope that the gratification of your wishes may not be a serpent to sting you, as mine has been.†(Shelley 15) It is the selfish pursuit of knowledge, to the detriment of an appreciation for natural beauty, which leads her characters down destructive paths. An important theme of Romantic literature, and one very present in Frankenstein, is the idea that the progression of industrialization would cause people to become estranged from their inner selves, their identity, and the natural world all around them. (Spielvogel 152) The Movement placed a great deal of emphasis on nature and a glorified past because the Industrial Revolution was destroying nature and creating a gloomy environment. Victor is so immersed in his selfish scientific pursuits that he becomes oblivious to natural beauty all around him, â€Å"Never did the fields bestow a more plentiful harvest or the vines yield a more luxuriant vintage, but my eyes were insensible to the charms of nature.† (Shelley 40) Waldman’s characterization of scientists penetrating the depths of nature to discover its secrets, draws attention to industry and Science’s attempt to master the natural world, and the disruption of the delicate balance between humankind and nature that had existed in a previous era. (Shelley 33, Damyanov) The early days of the Industrial Revolution held so much promise and potential for improving civilization, but the results were not always so beneficial. Similarly, Victor had noble intentions when he began his research, but a lack of self-restraint meant the outcome was destructive. Shelley was alarmed by â€Å"the absence of conscience, or awareness of implicit obligation to provide safeguards in scientific creations.† (Neal) She was concerned about the long-term effects as Victor/mankind focused on his ability to manipulate nature, and lost sight of the bigger picture. The creation that held so much promise in the beginning, whether it was Shelley’s monster or the Industrial Revolution’s machines and science, had become a scourge upon society and a threat to its very existence. Shelley issues an eerie warning as the monster threatens the lives of Victor’s loved ones, â€Å"Remember that I have power†¦you are my creator, but I am the master.† (Shelley 152). The countless adaptations of Frankenstein that have been drawn from the original, fail to capture the essence of the story and the societal conflict it addressed. Victor Frankenstein’s desire to challenge the laws of nature led him down a path of self-destruction. His pursuit of knowledge and glory consumed him as he lost sight of the larger purpose, and lost respect for the natural world. Shelley intended his story to be a lesson to a rapidly changing society. Originally applied to the Industrial Revolution, these same lessons are still appropriate to a contemporary society engaged in a Technological Revolution. It focuses on one of main problems of China and uses a descriptive statistical method to analyse the historical overview o f global natural disasters to ascertain the influence of sand dust storm on China. 2. 0 Sand Dust Storm in China 2. Definition â€Å"A sand storm is basically a wind storm that carries sand through the air, forming a relatively low cloud near the ground† (Coenraads 2006, 234). â€Å"Most sandstorms occur in the sandy areas of deserts. Some occur on beaches; dry riverbeds; or deposits of gravel, sand, and silt called alluvial fans† (Dirks 2010, 110). â€Å"Dust storms form in semi-arid and arid regions where small dust and sand particles are blown into the air† (Coenraads 2006, 234). â€Å"A dust storm may occur hundreds of miles and rise to a height of more than 305 meters. It carries as much as 875 metric tons of dust particles per cubic kilometre of air† (Dirks 2010, 392). 2. 2 Location Strong dust storms hit Xinjiang Autonomous Region, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Beijing, Hong Kong and Taiwan. (2010 China drought and dust storms 2010) 2. 3 W hen did it happen? It happened on March 22, 2010. (2010 China drought and dust storms 2010) 2. 4 What caused the event? Beijing meteorological offices director GuoHu said, â€Å"This influence of Beijing's dust source is in Mongolia and in middle Inner Mongolia region. The dust was wafted from thousands of meters altitude by the conveying of strong winds. From the perspective of meteorology, this is unstoppable climate phenomena† (Xinhua NET 2010). 2. 5 What areas were affected? The other areas were affected where were â€Å"South Korea, North Korea and Japan by March 22, before being carried across the Pacific Ocean by the jet stream, with some dust reaching the West Coast of the United States† (2010 China drought and dust storms 2010). 3. 0 Effects and Damage of Sand Dust Storm 3. 1 Short and long term effects â€Å"The dust storm in late March spiralled around a strong low pressure system. Many areas recorded an extremely rare level 5 â€Å"hazardous† rating f or air quality. Many flights in Beijing were also delayed or cancelled. Air pollution readings in Hong Kong reached a record high, reaching at least 15 times the recommended maximum levels by the World Health Organization. Taiwan also reported a new record for worst sandstorm conditions. A strong sandstorm tore through Turpan in Xinjiang on April 23, sparking fires that killed two people and forcing a shutdown of rail and road traffic for six hours† (2010 China drought and dust storms 2010). . 2 Extent of the Damage According to the news releases of the state forestry administration desertification monitoring centre of China on March 28 2010, Extent of the Damage of Sand Dust Storm affected 304 counties of 11 provinces and the air of 6 key cities was severely Polluted. The affected area is about 1. 20 square kilometres, the affected population is about 70 million people, and cultivated land area was affected more than 6. 4 million hectares, garden area was more than 1. million hectares, grassland area was more than 65 million hectares. (2010 new composition in the exams preparation material: climate and environment 2010) 4. 0 Historic Records and Extent of effects of Sand Dust Storm 4. 1 Historic Records of Sand Dust Storm in Beijing Sand Dust Storm does not only appear in the present times, it has already appeared since ancient times. The Sand Dust Storm has appeared since 1425 in Beijing. It normally mainly appeared in Beijing from January to April in Chinese calendar. The probability is 83. 6%. It has appeared almost annually since 2000. (Dr. Mars 2010) 4. 2 Main damage ways of Sand Dust Storm Firstly it is the strong wind. The strong wind uses sand and dust to destroy buildings and public facilities and cause the casualties of people and livestock. Secondly it is sand buried. The wind-drift sand causes a lot of events they are farmland, channel, cottages, railway and pasture were sand buried, and especially cause serious threat for transportation. Th e third way is wind erosion, and the last way is air pollution. Dr. Mars 2010) 4. 3 Damage of Sand Dust Storm The sand dust storm mainly causes 5 results. They are ecological environment deterioration, damage of production and life, losses of lives and property, damage traffic safety and harm to human health. (Dr. Mars 2010) 5. 0 Prevention and Positive effects of Sand Dust Storm 5. 1 Causes of Sand Dust storm The causes of sand dust storm might be degeneration of grassland and vegetation and excessive reclamation. 5. 2 Prevention The Sand Dust Storm has not been prevented yet.Beijing meteorological offices director GuoHu said,† As long as the sediment sources exist, sandstorm will not disappear† (Xinhua NET 2010). 5. 3 Positive outcomes from the disaster Although there is much harm of sandstorm, but the whole process of sandstorm is a part of natural ecosystem. It can slow the damage of greenhouse effect and slow the acid rain or soil acidification. (TT Aixuan 2010) 6. 0 The End Conclusion The sand dust storm is caused by degeneration of grassland and vegetation and excessive reclamation.Although it is a part of natural ecosystem, it causes lots of damages like: ecological environment deterioration, damage of production and life, losses of lives and property, damage traffic safety and harm to human health. We should try to prevent it with the ways like establish forecast system of sandstorm and improve environmental governance and environmental protection. Recommendations From this research report, we can find a nature rule that is if human cannot protect earth and make the ecological balance ourselves; earth will use its own way to make the balance. But here is a problem that is normally the method of earth uses is more harmful for human than our own way. Super Bowl Flyovers - Cost to Taxpayers

Super Bowl Flyovers - Cost to Taxpayers Its a longstanding tradition for the U.S. Air Force  or U.S. Navy to perform a flyover before every Super Bowl, but how much does such a thing cost American taxpayers? In 2015, the Super Bowl flyover will cost about $1.25 for every one of the 63,000 football fans in attendance at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday, Feb. 1. Put another way: The Super Bowl flyover costs taxpayers about $80,000 in gas and other operational costs. There is a minimal expense involved with the flyover,  Rear Admiral John Kirby,  the Pentagon press secretary and spokesman for the  secretary  of Defense,  said days before the 2015 NFL championship game between  the New England Patriots and the  Seattle Seahawks. I think the whole thing, soup to nuts for the flyover, will cost something in the neighborhood of $80,000. Why the Military Performs Flyovers The Department of Defense says the Air Force flyovers are a form of public relations and are conducted at  Ã¢â‚¬Å"events of national prominence.† Its not an exorbitant cost, and I would, you know, obviously remind you that we stand to gain the benefit, Kirby said. And theres an exposure benefit from having the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds fly over, a well-known, famous team, and that certainly helps us in terms of keeping our exposure out there for the American people. Added Kirby: I think theyre very popular, these flyovers. The Defense department receives more than 1,000 requests for flyovers at sporting events every year. The Thunderbirds and other teams accept many of them, including for NASCAR races and important baseball games. The U.S. Navys Blue Angels have done some of the Super Bowl flyovers, as well, including one in 2008 over a domed stadium. No one inside saw the flyover, though television viewers did for about 4 seconds.   For the publicity aspect of it, Id say its definitely well worth it when you consider the cost to advertise during the Super Bowl. The more people see our blue jets and recognize the Navy, the better it is for us,  Blue Angels press officer Capt. Tyson Dunkelberger told The Lost  Angeles Times in 2008. Debate Over Super Bowl Flyovers Some critics call the Super Bowl flyover a waste of taxpayer money. Washington Post columnist Sally Jenkins, writing about the 2011 Super Bowl flyover at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, said: For absurdity, how about those four Navy F-18s flying over the stadium - with its retractable roof closed? Everybody inside could only see the planes on the stadiums video screens. It was strictly a two-second beauty shot. Know what it cost taxpayers? Ill tell you: $450,000. (The Navy justifies the expense by saying its good for recruiting.) Others have questions why the government is spending  millions of dollars every year on  the flyovers at the same time sequestration has slashed its budgets. Related Story: What is Sequestration? If any portion of the defense department budget is going to be slashed, the act of flying planes over a crowded stadium would be the one to get rid of, wrote Mike Florio of NBC Sports. ... As a recruiting tool its value is questionable.

Data collection methods in conducting research of 'Implementation of Essay

Data collection methods in conducting research of 'Implementation of ERP in public sector in Oman - Essay Example A survey in the contemporary environment in which technology identifies modernism therefore identifies suitability of the data collection approach for the proposed study. In addition, management of public sector is centralized with regional headquarters in areas that are considered urban centers. This therefore means that reasonable sample size can be recruited from Oman’s urban centers for implementing the study on the public sector’s application of enterprise resource planning. Implementing the data collection method will involve allocation of research assistants to districts, each research assistant per district. The research assistant will then conduct interview with regional administrators, at their respective districts. The interviews will further target each office in the public sector, such as educational office, health office, agricultural office, among other administrative offices that exist in the assistants’ respective districts. One of the reasons for selection of telephone interviews for data collection is its suitability for the scope of the study that target offices at districts’ major centers in Oman. Consequently, the method will be feasible because of availability of necessary communication facilities. Advantages that the data collection instrument has also support its choice for application in the study. Immigration in UK Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4750 words

Immigration in UK - Essay Example This essay discusses that the level of immigration has risen considerably during the past 30 years: United Nation’s estimations of amount of individuals residing outside their own country go beyond 250 million. Yet the striking thing regarding these figures is not the number of individuals wanted to reside in a different country, â€Å"but how few†. Just a tiny fraction of the world's inhabitants migrates in any single year, mainly in their own countries. Global immigrants account now for merely about 3.5 percent of the world’s entire population. In addition, immigration is provisional in most cases. Until the year 1992, there was a â€Å"net outflow of immigrants from Britain†. Between the year 1992 and 2007 this drift upturned with an average net global migration of more or less 60,000 per year. It has increased quickly from 2005 to arrive at a maximum of 350 thousand during the year 2004. Net immigration during 2010 was 255 thousand. Population projecti ons imply that immigration is - and will carry on to be - a significant component of UK population alteration. Net immigration in the UK equals to more than half - that is 53 percent - of the entire population growth during the year 2007 in comparison with 62 percent during the year 2006 and 79 percent during the year 2001. The drift towards increased immigration is frequent to the majority of urbanized nations. In fact, regardless of current high degrees of immigration, the amount of the UK population born abroad is lesser than in several other nations. The UK has a lesser share of immigrants within its entire population (10.1 percent) in comparison to several other nations together with Australia (27.6 percent), Canada (21.3 percent), Germany (19.6 percent) and United States of America (14.1 percent). There are a number of explanations for the rise in immigration, together with financial issues, huge as well as continual variations in living patterns across nations, provincial fin ancial combination along with rising political unsteadiness all over the world. The previous two decades have as well witness the materialization of a migration market for expertise. â€Å"At the same time there has been a growth in demand for lower skilled migrants in countries - including the UK - with high economic performance, increased educational standards and ageing populations† (Stalker, 2008, p. 121). Even prior to European Union development, migration streams from Eastern Europe had risen subsequent to the descend of the Berlin Wall during the year 1989. The 1990s as well observed a considerable raise in the amount of shelter seekers. More lately, there have been major inflows of overseas learners coming to pursue education at British universities, and of immigrants moving to connect with their family units within the UK. Methods, which have been initiated to manage immigration, are mostly successful. A large number of individuals around the globe act in

Follow up to the previous order (Human Rights and Oil Companies) Essay

Follow up to the previous order (Human Rights and Oil Companies) - Essay Example In spite of the clear connection between ecological degradation and human suffering, human rights abuses and ecological deprivation have been regarded by most institutions and administrations as isolated concerns. Only as human rights campaigners have the tendencies to put concentration chiefly on natural resources conservation without dealing with human effects of environmental abuses. Accordingly, victims of ecological deprivation are undefended by the laws and mechanisms laid out to handle human rights violations. Human rights activism presents a crucial opportunity to tackle the issue of human impacts of ecological degradation and can serve as a catalyst for encouraging concepts and action in the actual world. Environmental setbacks are more handle to address than most believe. Every man, woman, and child has the right to a safe and healthy ecosystem. The fact is while international standards and systems have been set aside as legal ventures, implementation has always been domina ted by international relations. This paper seeks to look at the effects of oil companies in Nigeria the environment (Emeseh 45-60) According to Kalu and Ngozi (19-38), the Niger Delta in Nigeria has been the center of focus of environmentalist, human rights promoters and fair trade unionists across the globe. The trial and execution of radical environmentalist Ken-Saro-Wiwa and eight other cohorts of the Ogoni ethnic minority made universal headlines. The then non-violent protests of the Ogoni people make world-attention too. The activities of large oil firms such like Shell Elf, Agip and Mobil, amid others have caused many worries and backlash. A sequence of exploitive and fraudulent government in Nigeria have been endorsed and sustained by western administrations and oil companies, attentive on gaining from the fossils fuels that can be exploited. As individuals and transitional oil companies have been

Reflective learning journal

Reflective learning journal Reflective learning journal It is time to write the Reflective learning Journal at the end of this semester to conclude what we have learned from the Economics and Finance Engagement Project. Through reading outline, I realized that there was a great difference with other courses. First, almost all courses have mid-term exam and final exam; however, there are no any examinations in this course. Second, course arrangement is two hours in lecture and one hour in tutorial in other courses, while there is half an hour meeting with clients project sponsor in this course and two hours in group discussion. At the beginning of this course I felt that it would be simpler compared with other courses. In fact, I was wrong. I need to spend more time on this subject. Each week our group has group meeting in Cabramatta library, discussion always continue on two hours or the whole afternoon. After discussion, each member needs to spend long time on researching materials in internet and evaluating them. Although the process is hard, the result is wonderful. After the efforts of our teammates, our group has accomplished tenders and final reports on time. The communication skills, learning styles, information literacy, and data analysis has greatly improved through three months studying; it will be helpful for my postgraduate study and future works. In the tender documents I have mentioned that there are three units relevant to the project which is Investment, Project Management, and Statistics. Investment is relevant in regards to milestone seven which documents the retail and commercial opportunities Fairfield has in attracting office space leavers from Parramatta and Liverpool. Project Management is highly relevant to this project as time planning, material organizing, data analyzing, time controlling is all very crucial in ensuring the project successful and achieving all its objectives and milestones. Statistics is quite helpful as the project will need charts and tables to compare data and statistics and hence evaluate them. When our group has completed all the tasks, I found that Project Management plays the greatest role with the other two units. Investment theory is applied to the milestone seven. It is just recommends investors how to catch the opportunity in disadvantage situation. I mean that Fairfield has lowest pri ce, lowest quality and hardest to get transportation compared to Parramatta and Liverpool, why investors choose Fairfield rather than Parramatta or Liverpool? It is necessary to use investment theory to evaluate them. We have draw lots of charts and tables in the final reports to compare data, but the data analysis and evaluation are reflected from the Project Management. It can be said that project management in the tenders and final reports played a leading role in this project. Project Management tell us how to collect enough information in limited time, how to filter the most significant points from complex information. Although these three units play an important role in tenders and final reports, other economic and finance content is still need to add. For example, Macroeconomic and Market Model knowledge is widely used in final reports. Macroeconomics is a course that combined with the reality of the economic situation and development trend of the world. Our group found that there are a lot of retail rental advertisements in Parramatta, Liverpool, and Fairfield. The historic data show that the number of retail rental advertisements increasing in recent months. Whats more, the rent is cheaper than before. This fact is meeting to world economic situation. All we know that the world economics face to the hugest downturn in 21 century, during the financial crisis, many banks and large companies have declared bankruptcy. In Australia the impact of financial crisis is also considerable. The unemployment rate goes up nearly twice. Many small business investors are forced to give up their own business. It is quite normal that there are a lot of vacant retail stores in real estate agent website. Market Model is extremely relevant to the project; in particular the final objective where the concepts and strategies obtained in Marketing Principles will need to be implemented to evaluate the opportunities that Fairfield LGA has in attracting potential office space l eavers from Liverpool and Parramatta as well as introducing specific techniques to ensure this occurs. Macroeconomic have been learned in my sophomore, but Market principle have not learned now. In addition to, I think library is a good place for researching, discussion, studying. I can find any book I want to it. Except for the theories of economics, other learning skills and language abilities is especially needed for foreign student. Overseas students have to face language and cultural differences problem, for example, when I first meeting to the word â€Å"tender†, I confused it. I can not understand what the Chinese meaning of this word. My teammates explain the meaning of this word clearly for me. Overall, I still lack of sufficient knowledge to finish this course perfectly, it is force me to study harder and master more knowledge. Even if I have learned sufficient economic and finance knowledge, the emotion changes still have enormous impact on my learning. Particular to an overseas student who just arrived in Australia six months, it is very important for me to adjust psychological change. When I first meet this course I have a great interest in this project, each member of our group have enough enthusiasm to complete our own milestone. It is normal that disgusted with the project occasionally, because I must do lots of job in one day that included another subject assignment. This situation raises the pressure, and these pressures may come from learning, life and finance. For example, I accepted the East education nearly 15 years, so it is difficult for us to truly integrate into Western societies. What more, before I came to Australia, my parent give me lots of help when I needed. Without parents support, I am afraid to face some problem. On the other hand, I have to face language and cultural differences. I must thank our teachers spend long time on our foreign students and provide particularly concerns sometimes. I have improved myself a lot after I arrived in Australia. I was a shy, introverted student, and even performed unconfident sometimes. I would not like discussing with other group members at first. However, through four month communication, I have slowly started to change myself. I would like to talk with my teammates when I confused some problems and other life problems. So I really want to appreciate our group members, thanks for their serious, hard-working, humorous, and enthusiastic attitude to me. On one occasion, I should be completed my task that belong to my part, unfortunately, I must move house that day. I was so busy that I cleaned my home until 12 pm, it is really felt tried. When I intend to start my task, team leader send the SMS to me told me that I must be very tired for moving house, they have finished my part. I am really very grateful for their help. Both learning styles and education styles have different way in China and Australia. Although this is my first time experience the Western education, I already known that there are huge differences between Eastern educations with Western educations. Firstly, the different way was from the teaching methods. When I see our teacher Ingrid sitting at the table directly during the first class. It is amazing for me, because it looks like impolite for students in china. In fact, I find that the teachers purpose is wants to communicate with students more closely. However, this teaching method is impossible happened in China. In China every classroom has the podium and a blackboard in high school or university. The teacher is used to stand on the podium during the class. Secondly, from the student point of view, the distinction is even more apparent. If students meet problem in the class, we are willing to raise our hands to answer questions after the teachers permission or directly ask the teach er after the class finished. It is impolite for student to interrupt teacher lecture. Student need to keep silent in class in order to not disrupt teachers thinking. In Australia, I find every student is concentrated and activity in the class. Students can ask any questions without teachers permission in the class. For example, if any student feels their thoughts or ideas not the same as teachers idea, student will be asked it directly. However, It is a pity that teacher have to force student to answer questions in China, whats more, no one wants to give the answer even someone know the solution. Thirdly, there are few group discussions or group meeting in senior school or university in China. Even there is one group discussion in one semester which is a choice to chat with another topic that no relation with teachers topic. Whats more, most of students do not cherish these opportunities. All assignment completed independent by the most excellent students in the group without any as sistance. In fact, group meeting is important and useful in research or business. It is a good way to improve our team spirit. Reading and reference and that Chinese girl provide a lot of help. I have acknowledged some of the theories that I did not know. For example, from the Goldsteins article† Service Learning and Teaching about Globalization, I learned that Service and Activist learning(SAL)is a way that analyze social problem by corporate with community, many students were attracted who hope the world be better in the future. Other opinion is that Globalization is not just the region different from north to south, and that combined with winners and losers in both economic worlds. In another article â€Å"Increasing Creativity in Economics: The Service Learning Project† by Hervani and Helms. In the figure 2 Service learning pedagogy: Steps and implementation procedure, it looks like our course procedure. I also understand that the profit of this project is a good chance for developing the critical thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Our research topic relevant to soci al, I realized that there are lots of social problem still waiting for us to deal with them after research. The key values of service learning project are to improve the social awareness and caring, responsibility, accountability, critical thinking, creativity and active learning. That Chinese girl provides us lots of useful information, teaching us how to do the tender document, which part we should be attention to. In conclusion, I want to appreciate again our teachers Ingrid and Julianne, our teammates Brian, Ian, Linh, Kim and other people who always help me. Overseas students really have different experience with local students. From China to Australia is a very hard experience. First of all, we need to get great results in domestic examination. Followed by we spend long time to prepare for Ielts test, whats more, no one can guarantee your Ielts test result will be able to achieve what you wanted result, some students test 2 times, even more than 4 times 5 times. Visa through Australia government is also complex issues that we need to provide detailed information and sufficient finance source. Duration for Visa always last on one month. It can be said that overseas students harder than domestic students. So I cherished the opportunity to learn as much as possible I can.

History of Accounting Indicates That Accounting Process Has Evolved

The American Accounting Association defined accounting as:†the process of identifying, measuring and communicating economic information to permit informed judgments and decisions by the users of the information† (Aryasri, 2008). The history of accounting indicates that accounting process has evolved throughout the history. Although, identification, measurement and communication still remain as core activities of accounting process, the methods of doing them have significantly changed. What was once considered to be acceptable in the past may not be suitable for today as its environment has changed. However, the demand for changes usually comes from the environment rather than accounting profession itself. History has shown that unless there is a severe demand for changing, the natural tendency of accounting profession is to follow the convention. This has been proven by the era of stagnation. During this period, despite the invention of double entry accounting process and its advantages, businesses were redundant to adopt. However, when the industrial revolution took place, there was a great increase in the number of corporation which demanded further developments in accounting process. Many companies which are unable to adopt the accounting changes have failed badly. Nevertheless, through these failures, the problems in accounting process have been recognized and addressed promptly. For example, the problem of not distinguishing between capital and revenue and the allocation of asset depreciation to expenses were identified by the collapses of many railway companies. Accountants were then required to distinguish between capital and revenue items, measure the value of fixed assets, and determine depreciation rates (Hooper, Davey, Liyanarachchi & Prescott, 2008).. In the same sense, in today’s ever changing business environment, accounting process will face a great deal of challenges and demands, it is certain that accounting process will continue to evolve in order to adapt the changing environment. The implications of paragraph 12 of the New Zealand Framework can be summarized into answers to three interrelated questions below:What are financial statements to be prepared? 2. Who are they prepared for? 3. What is the purpose of the financial statements? First, there three types of information the preparers should be able to prepare according to the framework: 1. information which reflects the financial position of an entity, the balance sheet presents this kind of information; 2. information which indicates an entity’s financial perf ormance, which normally refers to as an income statement; 3. nformation that reflects changes in financial position, cash flow statement provides this kind of information (Deegan, 2009). Secondly, it is also important for preparers to consider who the users are and identify the potential users. Because different users require different information as they may make different decisions. However, â€Å"A wide range of users† the framework here stated, it is defined by framework that include: investors, employees, lenders, suppliers and trade creditors, customers, governments and their agencies, and public (Drever, Stanton & McGowan, 2007).Thirdly, it is important to make sure the financial statements have served their primary objective which is the information need of the users. In line with the decision-usefulness approach adopted by the current New Zealand Framework, when the preparers preparing financial statements they should always bear in mind that the financial statements they prepared should provide information that is useful to end-users in making economic decision. This includes providing information to help users to predict what may happen in the future and providing feedback on previous decision. Base the financial statements prepared by preparer, the users should be able to decide whether past decisions, and the information used to make them, were correct, and this can help they to make better decision in the future (Deegan, 2009). .

Food tech. Assessment Task Sensory characteristics of food. A. Appearance, the appearance of the caramelized apple tart was very good, the tart itself was a golden brown colour, the caramel apple mixture was a thick caramel brown colour which tasted really good, the serving of icecream on the side was left for a little bit to long as it began to melt which gave the whole overall appearance not such a great look. B. Color, the color of the caramelized apple tart was a mixture of deep golden-brown tarts with a caramel light brown apple sauce which was quite thick and a creamy white serve of half melted ice cream. These arrange of colors made the entire dish look very appealing due to the contrast of vibrant colors C. Aroma, the aroma of the caramelized apple tart was rich in flavorful smells. My senses were uplifted by the engaging aroma because it smelt so good. D. Taste, the taste of the caramelized apple tart was very satisfying, the constrasting of both cold ice cream and hot tart went down smoothly, ice cream was a little bit melted but this did not affect the taste in anyway, overall very tasty dish E. Texture, the texture of the caramelized apple tart was quite nice, the tart itself was smooth and slightly crispy. The apples in the caramel mixture were very soft and the caramel was a little bit thick. Ice cream was smooth but slightly melted. 3. Explain 3 functional properties that occur. Dextrinization is a process in which starch is converted into dextrins. Dextrin’s are any various polysaccharide which has been collected by the starch. This is made possible by the application of heat or acids. Dextrinization is mainly used as a thickening agent or a rising tool. Dextrinization occurs in Step 5 â€Å"bake for 15mins or until golden brown† this is referring to the puff pastry. Aeration is a process in which air comes into contact with a food. Aeration occurs in Step 6 during the Beating of the eggs. Denaturation is a process in which proteins loose their structures and denature because of external factors like heat or stress. Denaturing occurs in the protein strands of the eggs when they are beated until stiff, the eggs loose their structures and denature. 4. Make two recommendations for the improvement of the dish. If I could start over I would change the following; first I would use proper scales to measure ingredients correctly ather than eye guessing weights because I didn’t have proper scaling equipment. This would improve my final product because all ingredients would be correct measured out and this would finalise in a more accurate satisfying final dish. The second improvement I would make would have been not to leave the ice cream out because it began to melt. This would have helped to improve my dish because the the ice cream would have be en easier to eat as apposed to a liquid mess and the presentation would have looked a lot better. Thank You.
